1. Substance abuse treatment services – Substance abuse is perceived by majority of physicians as a long-term disease and a considerable amount of substance abuse treatment services are modeled to try and find the most suitable way to help someone recover. The people that are considered to have substance use disorder are the ones who can’t stop using and whose use is compulsive. A person’s total physiological and mental condition and even his genetics are all factors in determining if a person has substance abuse disorder. Substance addiction alters the chemical composition in the brain, and may have long-term negative effects.

2. Substance abuse treatment - Substance abuse treatment is more appropriately individualized to each patient, and there are a few initial steps the patient has to undergo before he can recover. The first of these steps is acknowledging the addiction. Denial was mistakenly believed to be a symptom of drug addiction, but current research indicates that it is not. People attempting to help a person accept that they have a substance abuse problem need to act with empathy, understanding, and respect.

3. Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders – Most of the time, persons who have been diagnosed with a substance abuse problem, also have a type of mental illness. Mental health professionals refer to these simultaneous illnesses as co-occurring and substance abuse disorders.

4. Persons with HIV or AIDS - Thanks to the increasing amount of successful drugs utilized to treat HIV/AIDS, individuals with the disease are able to live longer, more productive lives. However, those who are challenged with a life-threatening illness such as this, in spite of improved medical treatment, would still require the emotional support that only professional therapist can provide.

5. Gay and Lesbian - It’s difficult being gay in a somewhat straight world, that’s why it’s no wonder that so many people who seem to think of themselves to be gay or are a bit uncertain about their sexuality search for particular counselors who offer gay and lesbian therapy.

6. Seniors and older adults -
The senior population can be deemed as the fastest growing group of individuals in the country, this is due to modern technology which allows us to enjoy longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. Still, statistics indicate that a large portion of seniors or older adults still suffer from different mental health illnesses that should be treated through professional counseling or therapy. However, many perceive the assistance of a professional therapy as a sign of weakness, especially those in the senior or older adults population, this is the reason why mental health problems continue to proliferate in great numbers.
