Maryland is one of the territories of the United States; it is located around the north end of the mid-Atlantic region. The drug situation in Maryland is complicated by the presence of two major city areas in the state, Baltimore and the suburban counties of Washington, DC, in the southern part of Maryland.
The most commonly abused substances in Maryland are cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, club drugs (ecstasy), and marijuana, the most widely distributed addictive substance in the whole state.

Of course, not all of the impaired drivers are diagnosed as alcoholics, but all of them “should not” have been driving. Other drugs of abuse may statistically cause an equal number of injuries and deaths.
Individuals with alcohol and other drug problems are not particularly "bad people" attempting to become "good". They are actually good people who happen to have been afflicted with a life-threatening disease. Rehabilitation treatments simply help these people to become what they were before alcohol or other drugs destroyed their lives. How many times have you encountered someone saying (or said), “he is such a good person when he's not drinking (or using drugs)? It's time these people, get the help they need, to being that good person back.

TRW Treatment Services
Alcohol and Dug Abuse Evaluation
An evaluation by a Licensed or Certified therapist assesses what, if any, education or treatment is required. The background information of the client with regard to employment, schooling, family and health together with information about recurring patterns of alcohol and or drug use is obtained. Standardized and approved testing methodologies are also used. If the patient has a pending legal charge, the therapist writes a letter of evaluation which may be used during Court proceedings. The assessed recommendations are then explained to the client and are given the choice to enroll in the appropriate program. If a more intensive and specialized help is required, a referral is made.
The 26-Week Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program
The 26-week program is designed for patients who show evidence of an alcohol or other substance problem. Twenty-six weeks is the length of time mandated by the state for people who have received a DUI/DWI, depending upon their blood-alcohol-level (BAL). It has also been discovered as an appropriate standard treatment time length for persons addicted to other narcotic substances. Clients are required to attend a once-a-week group session for this whole period. During the treatment program, clients extensively learn about the problems that arise from the use of alcohol and other drugs, and develop skills in recognizing relapse triggers, and methods, as well as strategies to avoid relapse. Over the years many people who initially denied having any kind of substance problem come to eventually acknowledge their problem and move on to having better health, improved family relations, higher financial status, career fulfillment and a happy, productive future.
Outpatient Detoxification
Outpatient "detoxification" is available for individuals who are addicted to heroin and other opiates. Clients are referred to qualified physicians experienced in the field of this type of addiction treatment. Alcohol and benzodiazapine (tranquilizer) detoxification is usually best administered in an inpatient set up. Take note however, that detoxification is a medical procedure, and not a treatment in itself. Post-detox counseling services are also offered for those people referred to undergo Medical Detoxification.
It is strongly encourage that all patients who have done Medical Detox, to be more actively involved in a continuing treatment program. While medications and medical care can lessen the pain and trauma usually experienced in the process of detoxification, the powerful cravings, old detrimental behaviors and misinformation can and most often usually causes relapse to drug abuse. Treatment provides various ways for people to grow on their unique strengths and learn the skills to cope with life's stresses and problems without turning to drug use.
Six-Week Alcohol Education Program
This program is designed for those individuals who does not show clear evidence of an alcohol problem but has received an alcohol-related legal charge. Information about the effects of alcohol on the body, the repercussions of alcohol intake and the laws related to
alcohol use are all explained. These clients are also given the opportunity to meet other people who have an alcohol problem, to observe their denial in the face of overwhelming consequences of compulsive drinking. This method is often the most dramatic and memorable way in which to exhibit the power that alcohol can have over a human being. Hopefully, the knowledge gained in the sessions will help preclude any problems in the future.
Having the right knowledge is power. If you made a mistake because of ignorance of the facts about the effects and consequences of alcohol, learning now may save you from repeating the same mistakes.
Target Program
The Alternative Recovery Group, Expanded Treatment (TARGET) helps chronic relapsers and individuals with multiple legal charges or other consequences in developing the required skills to free from drugs and alcohol. The clients attend 2 or 3 sessions every week based on their needs, and intensely involve themselves in their own treatment. For some, TARGET has been a viable alternative to enrolling in an inpatient treatment plan. TARGET is a voluntary program and is limited to individuals who have a sincere desire to become and remain clean and sober. A lot of people who had attended other treatment methods were finally able to realize their goal of sobriety through participation in
TARGET. The length of treatment varies according to the person's need. A healing level of trust is slowly developed in the TARGET Program, to the benefit of everyone involved.
Post-Detoxification Treatment
After the detoxification from alcohol or other narcotic substances, the physical craving for the drug has already been removed. This initiates the more difficult next step. The cravings that most addicted individuals encounter, both for alcohol or other drugs, are quite intense and for some, are almost impossible to resist. Patients are strongly advised to attend meetings of Alcoholics and/or Narcotics Anonymous. Attending an effective treatment group adds vital support to the process of recovery and helps in forging positive relationships between the group members. Recovery is not an easy task, but it can most definitely be accomplished. The length of this treatment depends on the client’s individual requirements.
Drug Abuse Education
Quite a number of people today, particularly adolescents, have experimented with illicit drugs. If a pattern of drug abuse or addiction is not detected during the initial evaluation, a comprehensive education program detailing the true facts about the effects,
dangers and consequences of using illicit drugs may prevent future and current problems. This program is also offered to people with a first-time legal charge of possession of CDS (illegal drugs) or paraphernalia.
The program lasts for 12 weeks, and a random urinalysis or breathalyzer testing is administered. A successful completion of the program would entail complete abstinence from mind and mood altering substances.
