Maroon town donates money on rehabilitation of the junkies !

junkies are happy!! Maroon Town also visited a pioneering independent Drug Rehabilitation Unit set up single handedly by an extraordinary woman who was moved to doing something about growing addiction and drug abuse amongst young people. The centre with about 20 people although existing on slim resources does great work. For instance instead of weaning addicts off hard drugs with methodone as is the norm she prescribes them vitamins. The name Maroon Town is taken from a remote upland community in Jamaica, formed by runaway slaves, the maroons. The multiracial band Maroon Town started life in Brixton twenty years ago and while sticking to their fiercely independent ethos have released four critically acclaimed albums (read review) to world success. Their inspiring live act has been performed at prestigious venues and festivals all over the continent, from Scandanavia to Spain as well as throughout the UK. They have also toured Japan, Canada and Venezuela and in 2000 they toured in Barbados, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Indonesia and Central Asia doing concerts and music workshops with the British Council. Lately they have been in Brazil, Argentina, Ukraine, Hungary and the Czech Republic as well as the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrghystan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.

Edwin Willis-Outstanding Performance Award 2008

Edwin Willis has been with the Commission for twelve years and is a Substance Abuse Coordinator for the Homeless Services Transitions Program. As a Substance Abuse Coordinator, Edwin is responsible for overseeing the provision of case management and substance abuse services to the clients of the Transitions Program. Edwin is a mentor to staff and a great advocate for clients of the program. Sharing his knowledge and skills is something that he strives to do and is welcomed by everyone he works with. He always shows initiative and is a great problem solver which is an asset to this program. Edwin has fostered partnerships with many halfway houses, hospitals and other substance abuse programs all in an effort to ensure that clients can be properly referred and receive the treatment they deserve.
