Researchers Identify New Target for Treatment in Children's Cancer

Australian researchers have identified a potential new target for treatment of neuroblastoma, the most common solid tumour among young children, as published in prominent international cancer journal, Cancer Research. Professor Michelle Haber AM, Executive Director, Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA), said the findings were an exciting development towards one day finding an eventual cure for this childhood cancer. Cancer researchers have long known that the presence of multiple copies of the cancer-associated gene, MYCN, in neuroblastoma tumours is a powerful predictor of death in this disease. It has also been known that MYCN drives the expression of many other genes including one in particular called ODC1. "Patients whose tumours carry multiple copies of the MYCN gene, have a particularly poor prognosis and new therapies are urgently needed, said Professor Haber. "Our findings indicate that over expression of the ODC1 gene contributes to the aggressive biology of this tumour and poor clinical outcomes. Using a laboratory model of neuroblastoma, researchers tested whether inhibiting ODC1 activity with difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a drug known to suppress ODC1 function, would improve treatment of neuroblastoma, when used in combination with conventional chemotherapeutic drugs. "We found that the combined drug treatment prolonged tumour-free survival compared with chemotherapeutic drugs alone, suggesting that targeting ODC1 for suppression is a potentially valuable therapeutic approach," said Professor Haber. "By inhibiting the action of the ODC1 gene, we also found that the development of neuroblastoma could be delayed or even prevented, again highlighting the importance of this gene in the aetiology of this disease. The next step will be to test DFMO in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents, particularly newer agents that might be most effective in treating drug-resistant disease and also testing the drug combinations in different models of childhood neuroblastoma. "Because DFMO has been shown to be quite safe and is approved for use in humans, we would hope that we can proceed rapidly to clinical trials," said Professor Haber. Researchers at CCIA, in partnership with the Sydney Childrens Hospital, Randwick and the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, U.S.A., are in the final planning stages of progressing these findings into clinical trial.

NARCONON gives you 10 things to look for in Scientology

"Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious...It is corrupt sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has its real objective money and power for Mr. Hubbard... It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestionably and to those who criticize it or oppose it. It is dangerous because it is out to capture people and to indoctrinate and brainwash them so they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living, and relationships with others." -- Justice Latey, ruling in the High Court of London All about Scientology and the totally independent Narconon drug rehab program run by Scientologists for Scientology. Political Rant #71: Nasty NICE Attack Pain Sufferers

Once again we see NICE - the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence - turn nasty , basically denying tens of thousands of Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferers the medication needed to slow the progress and pain of the condition. A few months ago it was Alzheimer sufferers at risk. NICE is a Government rationing body who determine who can and who cannot have treatment , with cost the chief determining factor. It is all about the money - not theirs , as they haven't got any - but ours , because we pay for this. Please let our Government know that , as far as our money is concerned , we are happy that they spend it on people who need it and that we don't want to be associated with decisions that deny people suffering with RA a pain free life. ---------------------------------Patients' groups have reacted angrily to new guidelines which will mean 40,000 people with rheumatoid arthritis will have possible treatments withdrawn. Without the drugs the patients will suffer more pain, the possibility of more surgery and long-term disability, it is claimed. The decision amounted to a "prescription for pain", experts warned. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), today issues a final appraisal document -- the last draft before definitive guidance is issued -- stating that patients who do not respond to one powerful drug cannot try another of the same type. Currently doctors are able to try patients on three variants of a drug type which work by blocking the action of a chemical. If one does not work or its effectiveness wears out over time, sufferers can switch to another, prolonging the period they can remain fit and active. But the drugs are very expensive, with even the cheapest costing around £100 a week per patient. Many rheumatoid arthritis patients live with the disease for decades. They argue that cutting down the options will leave them needlessly living in agony for years. Cutting access to the drugs will speed their decline, meaning they are less able to work for a living and will have to rely more on benefits and care, campaigners say. Ailsa Bosworth, Chief Executive of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, said: "This decision is another nail in the coffin for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in England and Wales. "Nice is re-writing the rules of rheumatoid arthritis treatment in this country ignoring the clinical effectiveness of drugs and ignoring the views of patients and clinicians." Rheumatoid arthritis, which differs from osteoarthritis, is an auto-immune disease in which a person's joints are attacked by their body's own defences. It affects 400,000 people of all ages in the UK. Most suffer with a mild form that can be controlled with ordinary painkillers. However, tens of thousands needed the stronger drugs, called anti-TNFs as they block the action of a chemical called tumour necrosis factor (TNF). Between 20,000 and 40,000 people in England and Wales are taking an anti-TNF at any time, and 50 per cent have needed to switch treatments at least once. The anti-TNF drugs currently available on the NHS are Enbrel (its generic name being etanercept), Humira (adalimumab) and Remicade (infliximab). Scientists are not sure why one anti-TNF drug might stop working over time but doctors and patients agree being able to switch between them can be highly beneficial. Once arthritis patients have exhausted the anti-TNF options, under NHS rules they can move on to another drug called rituximab, a 'biologic' which works by modifying the immune system. Until recently they would have then been able to try a separate drug called abatacept, but in April Nice quashed that option, saying it was not cost effective. Consequently campaigners say Nice has reduced the treatment options for people with the disease from five to two.

Community meeting on harm reduction in Ottawa

This public forum on July 14, 2008 in Ottawa will be one of three public forums in a speakers series that also includes events in Toronto and Montreal. The series will present two powerful speakers who have experience with the implementation of harm reduction approaches. Liz Evans, the executive director and founder of the Portland Hotel Society -- the community organization that operates the supervised injection site -- will be speaking along with Tony Trimingham, a parent of an addict who died of an overdose and longtime activist for the supervised injection site in King's Cross, Australia. They will be reporting on the health care benefits of supervised injection sites, and discussing the implications of the recent BC Supreme Court decision for communities across the country. As you know, the BC Supreme Court recently ruled that the application of Canada's Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in regards to Insite, Vancouver's Supervised Injection site is inconsistent with Section 7 of the Charter of Right and Freedoms, protecting life and security of the person. As a result, Justice Ian Pitfield's judgment grants InSite a permanent constitutional exemption from federal drug laws, allowing InSite to legally continue its life saving work. Justice Pitfield's decision is significant. Recognising addiction for what it is, a chronic relapsing disease that requires more than a criminal justice approach, but rather a public health care response that minimizes the harm caused by illicit drugs, and keeping people alive long enough for them access detox and treatment. While this decision specifically affects Insite, allowing the primary health care facility to remain open indefinitely, Justice Pitfield's decision has ramifications outside of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, affecting communities across Canada struggle to address the tragic consequences of drug addiction. Below is a link to a video made by Tony Trimingham to demonstrate the importance of supervised injection facilities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ox3QaQmJ0g&mode=user&search

Substance Abuse Treatment & Recovery Approaches for Women

Substance Abuse Treatment & Recovery Approaches for Women. Host: Ivette Torres, Associate Director for Consumer Affairs, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Invited Panelists: Becca Crowell, executive director of Nexus Recovery Center; Duiona Baker, associate administrator for women's services at Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); Imani Walker, with the Rebecca Project for Human Rights (RPHR); and Steve Buchness, therapist, program coordinator, Emmorton Treatment Services. Substance use disorders present serious and unique health concerns for women. Unfortunately, few available services are designed to specifically meet the needs of women with substance use problems. Recent studies point both to the need for gender-specific services for women and to the greater effectiveness of such approaches compared to more traditional treatment modalities. This program will examine how treatment services are changing to help women successfully navigate the road to recovery. It also explores other issues that can affect their recovery progress, such as child care, co-occurring disorders, and domestic violence. Women drink less alcohol than men any way you look at. Women are more likely to be non-drinkers, start drinking at an older age, consume smaller quanties when they do drink, drink less frequently, and binge less than their male counterparts. But, she is more likely to drink alone. Nevertheless, many women have alcohol abuse or alcoholism problems. About 4% of women have a current problem and 8% ever have had a problem with alcohol. Women are at risk for alcoholism with 1 to 1 1/2 drinks per day vs 4 for men. Women's alcoholism and their relationships with a husband or signficant other is complex. Most people know that alcoholic men keep their wives while alcoholic women are divorced by their husbands. But this may actually be a good thing. Many women alcoholics stop once divorced of separated. Women who live alone are more likely to develop alcoholism. But this is not because they are unhappy being alone (married women are much likely to be depressed). It is because because men and women alike feel more comfortable commenting on and re-directing a woman's behavior. They will intervene much sooner. There is greater social pressures on women to confrom, so their drinking either must be hidden from others. Since this is difficult to do with a housemate not doing it is often the result. There does not seem to be any differences in the genetic tendency towards alochol abuse. A typical woman who comes for treatment is about the same age as a man. But while he has had years of gradual escalation, her problem evolved rather quickly. Her drinking was likely triggered by specific events and she came to treatment because of health or relationship (not job or legal problems like men) affects of the drinking. Women suffer more damage to the liver and other health problems with comparable amounts (standardized by weight) than similar men, so there are more health problems sooner. Women are more likely to be addicted to prescription drugs than illegal. They combine them with alcohol. Stimulants (cocaine, methaphetamine, even Phen-Fen) are used at about the same rate as men. But women's motivation is often weight loss or to temporarily counter depression that is more common in women. Women are more likely to start and continue smoking for weight control. Alcohol use is associated with higher rates of breast cancer and osteoporosis. They are more prone to liver disease. Menstrual disorders and impaired childbearing potential are associated with both alcohol and drugs. Specifically, heavy, irregular, paninful periods and PMS are implicated. Women smokers go through menopause earlier. While unplanned pregnancy is a consequence of addiction, it is also one of women's strongest motivators to quit. Female drug users have a much higher rate sexually transmitted disease, including AIDS. This is due to having unprotected sex with high risk partners while stoned. Male to female transmission is always higher. Also, drug addicted women trade sex for drugs.
