What is Substance Abuse?

Substances such as alcohol and other drugs make people feel good. It is because of the feeling that people get after using these substances they feel like consuming more of the substance. Individuals start consuming such substances repeatedly because of the pleasure they derive by its use. Substance Abuse begins when individuals start repeated, uncontrolled intake of such substances or drugs and they get withdrawal systems when they try to reduce or stop its intake. Substance abuse primarily occurs because human brains are wired in such a manner that if consuming something gives pleasure then you probably will probably want to consume it again. All substance that are addicting activate and affect the brain's pleasure circuit. Individuals who get addicted to substance stop thinking normally and abuse drugs without thinking of its consequences.

There are many types of substances that people can get addicted to such as Narcotics, Depressants and Sedatives, Stimulants. Anabolic Steroids and Human Growth Hormones. People not only get addicted to such illegal drugs but also sometimes fall prey to prescription drugs that are prescribed by their doctors. People also get addicted to things that they do consider as drugs such as Alcohol, nicotine and smokeless tobacco. The uncontrolled and repetitive use of such drugs or substances whereby a person gets addicted to it and thinks that he cannot survive without the further intake of these substances is know as Substance abuse.

How substance abuse can affect your health

The best indicator to find if an individual is addicted to substance abuse is when the person cannot quit using the substance even though it starts affecting his general well being and his health. People continue substance abuse even when they cause problems with health, money, work or school or with relationships. Another indicator of substance abuse is when a person develops tolerance to drugs and alcohol and has to consume more and more to derive the same level of satisfaction. Other possible signs of substance abuse are -

Substance abuse although a disease is completely and totally curable. But substance abuse is a chronic and a relapsing disease. It may take several attempts before a person can get totally drugs or alcohol free. There are many drugs treatment centers or drug rehabilitation centers where substance abuse can be treated. Drug rehab centers rely on counseling, medication or both to cure substance abuse.
